Thanksgiving Day in Canada

Differently from what everyone thinks, the Canadian Thanksgiving was first celebrated in 1578 by Martin Frobisher – more than 40 years before the Pilgrims arrived.

What is celebrated?

Thanksgiving is a day of being grateful for the past harvest and fortune. It is also a day of recognizing every good thing that has happened to you and being thankful for that.

National holiday?

In Canada, Thanksgiving was proclaimed a federal holiday in 1879. Parliament called it “a day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”

When is the Canadian Thanksgiving?

In Jan. 31, 1957, the Parliament changed the previous date due to the harvest season take place earlier than the United States’. The decision was to celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the second Monday in October.

How do Canadians celebrate?

Thanksgiving is always on a Monday, which means, long weekend. We have two traditions: turkey and football. But families and friends get together to have the traditional meal: turkey, stuffing and vegetables. Dinner doesn’t necessarily have to happen on Monday though and Thanksgiving Day Classic is an annual dispute involving the Canadian Football League.

PS.: don’t forget! The school will be closed since it’s a national holiday.
